Over 200 entrants enjoyed the successful Nguni Classic MTB and trail runs
on Blanerne Farm between Ladysmith and Newcastle on the weekend of 4 & 5
September. Organised by Angie Stuart, the family orientated weekend
included a kiddies 2 ½ km ride, two 5km trail runs, 14km, 19 km and 42 km
MTB races. Comments from participants were that the races were very
exciting in that they were technically challenging and covered a variety
of terrain from a suspension bridge over a river, a mist tunnel, rocky
trails, steep down hills, a narrow dam wall, flat track through virgin
thornveld and flat grassland and grazing Nguni cattle. A campsite provided
hot showers and ablutions while the entertainment included rugby on a big
screen , local Zulu dancers, a jumping castle and face painting for kids.
Meals were cooked on site by the Ladysmith Rotary Club and the local scout
and cub groups. All this happened in good sunny warm weather and under a
beautiful clear starlit sky . Race organizer Angie thanked her many
generous sponsors for great prizes and her team of helpers. The star of
the weekend was Ian Don-Wauchope who won the first 5km trail run and then
jumped on his bike and won the 42 km MTB. This was the inaugural event and
will definitely be on next year's calendar.
